Excerpt from book: CHAPTER VII. Lady Griffith's reception began at eight o'clock, and by half-past the audience was assembled in the large drawing-room, awaiting the performers. Soon the tuning of a guitar was heard, then the curtains were drawn apart, and Mrs. Gwilym was seen, seated in a graceful attitude, with the guitar suspended by a blue ribbon from her neck. After striking a few chords, she sang with some taste and brilliancy a pretty little Spanish ballad. It was rapturously applauded, and an encore called for, but promising to sing instead later in the evening, she came forward and tookthe place reserved for her amongst the audience. Next appeared Mr. and Mrs. Watling, and read the smothering scene in " Othello." They were singularly unsuitable, this nice old couple, to the parts they assumed. He, a white-haired English gentleman : she, a portly dame in yellow satin, with a florid-complexion, and her hair dressed in two flat curls, surmounted by a kind of toque of crimson velvet. Nevertheless, they read with so much expression that the incongruity was overlooked, and when Othello, bending over Desdemona, kisses her, the clapping was almost deafening. This was followed by a piece of instrumental music exquisitely played by Miss Scott. The reading from " Macbeth" came next, and was not as successful as " Othello." Mrs. Seaforth's toothache had been growing in anguish for the past twenty-four hours, and had caused an unsightly swelling, ofwhich she was painfully conscious. Like a heroine, however, she determined to do her duty, cost what it might. Admiral Hansard wheeled himself up to the table in his chair, and arranged the lamp to his satisfaction, but he, too, was not at ease. His own particular copy of Shakspeare had been left at home, he did not know how to find his places ...
